'Craigmin Bridge', watercolour, 39 x 28 cm.
This old bridge stands near Drybridge, just south of Buckie in Moray in northeast Scotland. It used to serve as a carriage bridge linking a nearby stately home with Drybridge and the rest of the world. Its evolution is written in the brick. Its lower arch used to be the whole bridge when it served only pedestrians and animals, which could descend the hill to cross the bridge and climb the other side. When the bridge was needed for wheeled traffic (when the house was built) it was necessary to extend it upwards -hence the upper arches!
Now, the bridge stands alone surrounded by trees (I've cut them back a bit here!) and with only grass crossing the bridge's span. You can actually get into the structure through the doorway in the image and walk through the upper arches - though care is required as there are no guard rails in the arches. I'm told that this is a popular location for wedding photos now - although wellies would be required with your wedding dress or suit if there's been any rain recently!!
The original painting is now sold.
