''The Castle' - University College, Durham', watercolour, 58 x 37 cm.
University College, Durham, known as 'The Castle', is Durham's oldest College. Durham Castle was for centuries the residence of the Bishop of Durham but when he moved in the early 1800s the castle area was restored and given to the University. Here we see the entrance to the Castle, with University buildings behind, and the restored Keep at top right. The College's motto 'Non Nobis Solum' means 'Not for ourselves alone'.
The original painting was sold by commission.
