'Cullen Beach from the Castle', watercolour, 58 x 37 cm approx.
Cullen castle may only be a ruin but it has wonderful views across Cullen and the beach and harbour below. Here we're looking to the west along Cullen's beach with the Three Kings rock formation clearly visible right in the middle of the beach, and the houses of Portknockie on the headland at the end of the beach. The famous Cullen Viaduct, which used to carry the coastal railway line, can be seen crossing the A98 road at left, which snakes its way between the arches of the viaduct as it leaves Cullen. The old fishing cottages of Seatown are seen at the bottom of the image. This is a wonderful and varied beach and, when the weather is fairly calm and the sun shines, the water takes on this beautiful, almost tropical azure shade - I just had to paint it like this!
The original painting is sold.
