'Sunset on the River Spey'.
At only about 100 miles long, the River Spey is not a long river, but it is a typically untamed Scottish one. It is a fantastic salmon fishing river, and many fishermen and women can be seen standing in waders casting fly, as here, along its length. Here at Fochabers the river is only a few miles from its exit into the Moray Firth and the wide, shallow valley is full of rocks and rounded stones on either side of the river. We're walking a stretch of the Speyside Way, heading southwest towards Fochabers from Spey Bay where the river makes a lazy turn between piles of glacial gravel, and fishermens' tracks abound between the trees. The setting sun just cuts the horizon, dazzling us with its rays in a last display of light. The fisherman will finish soon, and we'd better get going too. This is one of our favourite walks, not far from our home (just to the right of the sun, over the hill) and the painting was inspired by watching the sun go down here last Autumn. Scotland is never so beautiful as at sunrise and sunset; I hope the warm colours, serenity and feeling of endless space that inspired me come through in this image.
The original painting is now SOLD.
