'The Escaping Airman', watercolour, 28 x 38 cm.
The title is a bit misleading, because it refers to the fact that this painting was commissioned as a print that would be given as a leaving gift for RAF airmen from the RAF Warrant Officer and Sergeants' Mess at RAF Waddington. It replaces a silver statue previously given when they left the Service. The painting shows a WW2 Battle of Britain pilot scrambling for his aircraft, carrying his parachute. It is a little known fact that most of the pilots who took part in the Battle of Britain were not officers; this man is a Flight Sergeant. I believe that this original painting will hang in the Mess at Waddington; I hope the recipients enjoy their leaving gift!
The painting was sold by commission.
