'Sentry: Thirty Years of Service', watercolour, 74 x 50 cm.
An RAF E3-D Sentry AEW1 of VIII Squadron comes in to land at the end of thirty years of service for the RAF at RAF Waddington. In the background can be seen Lincoln Cathedral; Waddington has a long history with the city of Lincoln. The badges below the aircraft are those of the NATO AEW Component; 8 Squadron and 23 Squadron which both operated the Sentry; on the right 54 Squadron which is responsible for ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Targeting and Reconnaissance) training across the RAF; 56 Squadron, the RAF's Air Warfare Centre; and RAF Waddington, all reflecting their association with this iconic aircraft.
The Sentry was retired in its 30th year and flew its final operational flights in August of this year. VIII Squadron will reform shortly however, when it becomes the first Squadron to operate the new Wedgetail, the Sentry's replacement, from RAF Lossiemouth.
