'Speyside View', watercolour, 55 x 36 cm.
Here we're beside the River Spey in northern Scotland, just before it empties into the Moray Firth. The main river channel is at top right; here at the end of its run, the river has lots of side channels that the water flows in and out of, as seen here. Gravel left over from both the river and the glacier which preceded it until about 8000 years ago, is everywhere, as well as rocks pulled down the valley by the glacier and now stacked here. In the distance we can see the Spey Viaduct, which used to carry the coastal railway across the river through Garmouth until the 1960s, but now carries National Cycle Route 1 and the Speyside Way - it's a lovely walk! In the background are Ben Aigan at left and the taller Ben Rinnes at right.
The painting was completed and sold as a commission only.
