'The Spey Viaduct from the River', watercolour, 52 x 34 cm.
I love the Spey Valley and I'm very fortunate to live here. This scene, a few miles from where I live, shows the railway viaduct across the Spey only about a mile south of the point at which the river meets the sea at Spey Bay. The bridge used to carry the London North Eastern line between Aberdeen and Inverness; although still in good condition, now it carries a National Cycle Route on this scenic ride. On the day I visited, I was so taken by the blue of the water reflecting the sky, with the white sparkles forming a jewel box as it glittered in the sun. The Spey is much wider than this channel: you can just see the main river emerging behind the pebble banks of the island at left.
